Campaigns - EU Referendum

Joanne Backs Calls for a Referendum on the EU Reform Treaty

Joanne has joined hundreds of thousands of citizens in signing the Daily Telegraph, the Sun and the ‘I want a referendum’ campaign’s petitions demanding that Gordon Brown upholds Labour’s manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on the EU Constitutional Treaty.

Vocalising her displeasure over Labour’s conduct Joanne said: ‘The blatant disregard with which Gordon Brown’s government has treated the British people is utterly indefensible and they must be held to account for their actions. Labour were elected to govern Great Britain on a manifesto that guaranteed us a referendum; they appear to regard this promise as little more than an inconvenience so long as they achieve the outcome that their ‘chums’ in Brussels are demanding.’

At the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth Gordon Brown once again insisted that the European Union Reform Treaty is significantly different to the Constitutional Treaty and that it does not represent 'a fundamental change' in Britain's relationship with Europe. Architects of the original Constitutional Treaty such as Valery Giscard d’Estaing disagree with Mr Brown’s convenient line of reasoning and instead insist that: 'Public opinion will be led to adopt, without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not present to them directly…All the earlier proposals will be in the new text, but will be hidden and disguised in some way.'

Joanne is also unconvinced by Labour’s rhetoric and claims: ‘Regardless of how this treaty has been rebranded, the Conservative Party have pledged to hold a referendum and we shall honour this commitment. The EU Constitution threatens to undermine our national sovereignty and I am of the opinion that the British public have a right to decide if we are to cede yet more power to Brussels.'
