Campaigns - Social Action

Making Westminster North a Safer, Better Place to Live

Joanne supports a number of charities and organisations throughout Westminster North who work to provide opportunities within a structured environment for many of our local residents. Two of the groups with whom Joanne is working closely are:

  • The Butterfly Reading Group -The Butterfly school programme teaches children between the ages of 5-12 to read through the use of phonics. The children take a two hour class every week and a 30 week programme can see a child’s reading ability improve by an entire academic year.
  • The All Stars Boxing Gym -The All Stars Boxing Club provides a vital sports service for the young people of Harrow Road and Queen’s Park. The gym’s future is threatened by their landlord who is reluctant to pay for the upkeep of the facility and Joanne is working to provide a guarantee of long term security for them. The Club’s ultimate ambition is to turn the building into a community centre offering a wide range of facilities for young people based in a secure, controlled environment.

Speaking about her passion for contributing to social action projects Joanne said: 'Local charity workers are the unsung heroes of our community and yet their efforts are constantly undermined by a lack of funding; I am committed to ensuring that a comprehensive support network is in place so that they may continue working to improve the lives of our constituents. The deficiencies in the current education system and the utter lack of an effective youth support programme in Westminster North means that these schemes are vitally important if we are to make our constituency a safer, better place to live.'

Joanne’s social action campaign is intrinsically linked to her commitment to tackle the high crime rate in Westminster North; low levels of literacy and a lack of structured recreational activities are often cited as important factors that cause young people to engage in criminal activities.
