An article in Sunday’s Observer newspaper describes Joanne Cash, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Westminster North, as a ‘freedom fighter’... ‘on the front line in the war against the power of the state.’
Robert McCrum's article identifies a number of people drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds and from right across the political spectrum united by a determination to uphold our civil liberties.
They are all playing a key role at this Saturday’s sell-out Convention on Modern Liberty at the Institute of Education where a host of internationally distinguished speakers will discuss the current crisis of fundamental rights and freedoms in Britain, and throughout the world. The intention is to raise awareness of the importance of defending our freedoms and to engage people in these issues.
Joanne is chairing the morning session on Press Freedom. She will be joined by Fatima Bhutto, the Granddaughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister, Zulfikhar Ali Bhutto, the writer and journalist Nick Cohen and Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of the Guardian.
Joanne is proud to be playing such a prominent role in the Convention on Modern Liberty:
“John Stuart Mill was a Westminster MP so there is a fine tradition of defending freedoms in this constituency that I am determined to uphold.
For me, the Convention on Modern Liberty represents an important opportunity to challenge Labour's nanny state tendencies.
Our rights and freedoms have been under constant attack since New Labour came to power. They use fear of terrorism as the front to invade our lives and control information on us, creating a more powerful and intrusive State."
